Our First Bike ride in 2006

The first Sunday night Bike ride was a great event. Twelve people showed up to discover West Island on their bikes. Quiet an impressive sight on our many varieties of bikes. John McCoy in his recumbent, several Hybrids and a few road bikes. We left Tom’s house and headed down Sconticut Neck Road to Wilbur’s Point. What a great view of the Bay from the end of the Point. From Wilbur’s point we headed back up the neck and took a turn onto West Island. Tom show us an area that had some dirt trails and since he had a road bike he and a few others waited while we took a quick look at what was at the end of the trails. They did assure us they would come looking if we didn’t return promptly. A short and bumpy ride and the trail opened up to the cove side of West Island. A minute to enjoy the view and we met up with the group and went to see if the gates to the Estate just off West Island were open to guests but the were not receiving. They probably didn’t know it was the Buzzards Bay Rowing Club coming to call. Well the ride wasn’t over yet on to West Island Beach on the way we were able to see the many new homes replacing the once quaint summer “Shacks”. We spent a few minutes at the beach and then back to Tom’s. All in all we rode about 10 – 15 miles.

It seems that we have quite a few people who like to bike. The plans are to keep going out on Sunday’s and possibly increase our endurance. Maybe we can plan a day ride in the fall with a little tailgate party at the end. We’ve had suggestions to bike not only the general area of Fairhaven, Acushnet, Marion, Mattapoisett but to expand to Westport, Myles Standish and of course Bristol. It seems the BBRC might be putting a little more Peddle in their Peddle, Paddle and Pull. Also heard mentioned was a rumor of participating in the New York 5 Boro Bike Tour. Bicycling is just another way to enjoy and appreciate this beautiful area we live in. Come and join us!
